For the use
of Charlton Village October 1887 T.H.B. |
||||
T.H.B was Thomas Horlock Bastard, Lord of the Manor of Charlton Marshall, and there's an article relating to the opening of the pump on Charlton Marshall's website. | ||||

A lead pump at Minterne Magna, Dorset. Thanks to Paul Snelling for
the photos, left and right. It looks very different from an
earlier photo, in that the wooden casing with
ball finial has been removed. Photo from the bequest of George
O'Leary. Markings: A crown, "D" and "1893". It has been suggested that the crown and "D" represent Edward St Vincent Digby, 9th Baron Digby (1809-1889), of nearby Minterne House. (Thanks, Shawn, for that info.) 1893 was the date of his son's marriage - perhaps the pump commemorates it. Manufacturer: Unk. |
This pump at Osmington, Dorset, was spruced up and fitted with a
new handle by the Osmington Society in 2013,
although the renovation didn't go so far as to renew the cap which, unusually,
was at some previous stage turned from wood.
That wood has subsequently rotted. Thanks to Shawn Shaw for the 2016
photos. Markings: "RD NO. 46671" and a panel stating "A.SYER PENTONVILLE ROAD LONDON". Manufacturer: The Registered Number confirms that it's a Joseph Evans pump (although there's no Lion Trademark present). The pump was probably originally supplied/installed by Alfred Syer of London. |
