Fontmell (click on photograph to bring up bigger/better version).
Not many thatched pump houses around: this one's at Fontmell
Magna, Dorset. Thanks to Paul Snelling for the photos, left & right, and to
Shawn Shaw for a close-up of the markings. Subsequently, we're told that this
pump, although it's old, is not in fact the original one at this location.
There were apparently a series of ornamental taps in the village, fed by a
spring in the nearby hills, and one was located here. Research
continues. Markings: "EVANS BRAND ENGLAND" written in a circle and in the middle "CULWELL" and an "E". Manufacturer: It's an early Joseph Evans, made before they adopted the rampant lion as their trademark. |
A barrel pump at Fontmell Magna, Dorset. Thanks to Shawn Shaw for
the photo. Markings: A probable PIF in a roundel. Manufacturer: Unk. |
