Bow, Devon. Photos supplied by John Hurst - thanks, John. On the
face of it we have a probable lift and force pump mounted on its plank, with
the working barrel below ground level, and the delivery pipe emerging to the
left, over a trough. But something's a bit unusual here - is that a
crank arrangement connected to the handle? Could
there be a spindle emerging on the other side of the wall, i.e., inside the
house? And if so - why? To fill a roof cistern without venturing
outside? Markings: None visible in photo. Manufacturer: Unk. |

The old
stone pump in Fore St., Winkleigh, Devon. The pump was erected in 1832 when the
Great Reform Act was passed, and carries the names
of the men behind the reform - the Lords Grey, Brougham, Russell and
Althorp. Thanks to John Hurst for these photos. It was brought back to working order in 1996, and I assume that it's still working today. What's more, it was blessed during Winkleigh Fun Day, 2008. A panel behind the pump carries some more detail, and at the nearby Village Hall there's a commemorative plaque, one of a series of 26 produced in 1994 by potter Harry Juniper - my thanks to Richard Holladay for supplying these two close-up photos. Markings: "1832" and the names of the Lords. Manufacturer: Unk. |
