great ness A venerable wooden pump with cast iron fittings at Great Ness, Shrops. Thanks to John Haynes for the photo.

Markings: There's a notice on the pump and another nearby, but they're not decipherable in the photo. Elsewhere it's reported that they record the fact that it was the first pump in the village, installed in the early 1800s, and that the well was deepened and covered in 1896. It is suggested that the handle might have been made at the forge in nearby Nesscliffe.
