This old

largely of wooden construction, although twice renovated. Thanks to John Hurst

ASTON SQUARE PUMP THIS VERY OLD PUMP
WITH ITS HAND-FORGED MECHANISM ENCLOSED IN WOOD PRE-DATES CAST IRON PUMPS,
THE BARREL AND CASE BEING OF A HOLLOWED-OUT TRUNK OF WOOD SITUATED OVER A
SHALLOW WELL. IT WAS FOR MANY DECADES THE WATER SUPPLY FOR THIS HAMLET BUT
THE PUMP IS NOW RIGID BECAUSE OF THE RISK OF POLLUTION OF THE WELL
WATER. UNDER LEASE, THE PUMP WAS RENOVATED IN 1986 BY OSWESTRY RURAL
PARISH COUNCIL AND AGAIN IN 1999 WITH GRANT AID. PLEASE TREAT THIS
