In this example of a lift and force pump the vertical delivery pipe, which would have extended to an upper floor, has been cut off above the stopcock. The operating rod can be seen emerging from the stuffing box, which would contain a gland where a good seal was provided by "stuffing" it with horse hair or rope soaked in tallow.
