Whitwell (click on photograph to bring up bigger/better version).
Nothing fancy about
this no-nonsense pump in the centre of Whitwell, Derbyshire. It's fully encased
in wood - and even the handle is wooden. The stone troughs around it look old,
and there are photos in
existence showing the pump as a
busy centre of
attention in years gone by. The same web site has an interesting
history of the water supply in
the area, and records that in 1897 there were 39 pumps in the village.
Apparently there's still a line of them in the High St - must take another
look. Markings: None found. Manufacturer: Unk. |
