And an
unusually chunky structure outside the almshouses at South Dalton, E. Yorks,
with a strangely high-set handle. It has both a spout and a tap - so has it
been connected to the mains at some latter stage or, as has been suggested,
could there be a cistern mounted above the pump, filled from a well directly
below by some poor soul operating the handle every morning? In that way the
occupants of the almshouses would be spared the effort of having to pump each
time they needed water. Thanks to John Hurst for the photo (and the
theory).
