Ross-on-Wye

ross-on-wye This pump, in private hands, is a contractor's pump, and originally intended to be portable. Thanks to Rob Sedman for the photos. It's about 1.6m in height, and its barrel, spout and downpipe are made from riveted sections, the handle fulcrum being bolted on. There's a plaque on the side of the pump, inscribed as follows:

Manufacturer: Possibly Smith & Watson, of Ross-on-Wye, or were they just the suppliers?

Markings: Not visible from a distance.

ross on wye This pump in Edde Cross St has been moved slightly from its original location, and in its place is a plaque with the following inscription:
THIS 3RD PUBLIC WELL WAS SUNK 1844
AND PUMP ERECTED THEREIN
ANNO. DOMINI. 1845, BY THE ROSS
TOWN COMMISSIONERS. THE LAND
BEING PURCHASED BY PRIVATE
SUBSCRIPTION, & THE WHOLE FOR
EVER DEDICATED TO THE PUBLIC.
Markings: Flag and roundel.

ross on wye The Wilton Road pump, on the outskirts of the town near the bridge over the river Wye. It's just about identical with one at Hannington, Swindon.

Markings: Shield and "BAMFORD'S UNIVERSAL LIFT PUMP".

Manufacturer: Bamford's of Uttoxeter.

ross on wye On Wye St, opposite the Riverside Inn, there's a tiny pitcher pump mounted on what is now a wishing well.

Markings: Flag and 3IN.

Manufacturer: Lee Howl.
