Markings: The cowling carries the name "REEVES, BRATTON" on both sides. This name also appears on the baseplate, which has the part number "87". The ratchet pawl has part number "201".

barrow gurney An enormous formal stone pump situated in the centre of a courtyard within Barrow Court, near Barrow Gurney, estimated as dating from 1891. There are two wooden maintenance doors on other sides of the shaft. Inscribed around the top is: barrow gurney

PATWELL PUMP
The present pump and pumphouse would appear
to date from the late 18th or early 19th century
and replaced an earlier pumphouse on the same
site. It is rare in Somerset to find a public pump
complete and in working order. The machinery
inside the building can be inspected by arrangement
with the Parish Clerk. Repaired 1984.

doulting Doulting, Soms. Thanks to Matt Rogers for the photograph. The cast iron panel seems to display the letters "WNFM" but closer inspection suggests that it might in fact be "WMFM". If so, this could stand for William Melliar Foster-Melliar (1836-1906), of North Aston Hall, Deddington, Oxon, who was High Sheriff of Oxfordshire in 1865.The woods at nearby Beacon Hill were owned by Mr. Foster-Melliar and there are reportedly several boundary stones there which are also marked WMFM. A brass plaque (which was still reported in 2013 to be highly polished) is mounted above the original cast iron panel, and reads: doulting
