In the centre of Great Dunmow,
Essex, this pump is very similar to one at Thaxted, but with evidence that a
lower spout has been replaced by a higher one. There is some history behind the
pumps in this village, as their removal led to a pump riot in 1786 with 12
people being incarcerated in Chelmsford Gaol as a result. Photo supplied by
