Grittleton (click on photograph to bring up bigger/better

An
unusual "pump" at Grittleton, Wilts, sitting on an octagonal cast iron plinth.
Removal of a small inspection plate on one side revealed that all internal
mechanisms have been lost, and that it stands above a small stone-lined well,
the surface of the water being about 3 ft below ground level. An inscription on
a slightly damaged shield on the front of the pump reads:
PATENT THE SAFETY WATER ELEVATOR CO LD DUNSTABLE
Markings: "Patent" on top cover; "B1" on plinth; "B11" and
"B12" on spindle brackets.
Manufacturer: The Safety Water Elevator Company Ltd of
Dunstable.
