Blackness (click on photograph to bring up bigger/better version).
There are two pumps in Blackness, Falkirk; this impressive one is in the village. Photo supplied by John Gow - thanks, John. | ||||||
Markings: "The gift of
Alexander McLeod, Esq., [more words, obscured by paint], to the inhabitants of
Blackness, his native village, 1875". Manufacturer: With the exception of the cap, the pump top looks like an S.Owens No. 14 Ornamental Pump. However, the cap is very similar to that of a Glenfield & Kennedy water pillar just a few yards away, and the less than perfect fit suggests that it's a later replacement. |
The other, in the grounds of Blackness Castle, is deteriorating.
Compare John Bolton's 2012 photo on the left (thanks, John) with an earlier
one, right. Markings: None. Manufacturer: Unk. |
